No damage to facilities or flight hardware is reported at the Kennedy Space Center following the exit of Ernesto from Florida. As the tropical depression passed through the area on Wednesday, the peak wind recorded on Launch Pad 39B, where Space Shuttle Atlantis stands, was measured at 44 miles per hour at 4:45 p.m. EDT.
The shuttle was surrounded by the rotating service structure as NASA decided to protect it in place when weather forecasts improved.Mission managers are considering a possible launch as early as Sept. 6.
Blast Off
If that date is selected, the liftoff time would be 12:29 p.m.Emergency operations teams began initial damage assessments at the space center starting at 2 a.m. EDT on Thursday after Ernesto moved past.

The center reopened for normal operations on Thursday morning.On Tuesday, mission mangers halted a rollback of the space shuttle to the protection of the Vehicle Assembly Building as the projected path of the tropical storm skirted further west than first expected, allowing a sufficient decrease in winds to permit the shuttle to ride out the storm at the pad.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - After a week of weather delays

NASA officials on Thursday set a Wednesday launch time for space shuttle Atlantis on its mission to resume construction of the international space station.

The launch decision was made after a check of
Kennedy Space Center following Ernesto's pass as a tropical depression on Wednesday found no serious damage.

"We're back," said NASA spokesman Bill Johnson. "There was no water intrusion in any operational areas, and so basically we came through this one unscathed."

The launch time was set for 12:29 EDT on Wednesday. If the shuttle doesn't lift off then, NASA has launch opportunities in the following two days.

Atlantis' six astronauts, who flew in their training jets back to Houston earlier this week, planned to return to Florida Saturday morning. The countdown was set to begin Sunday morning.

Tropical Storm Ernesto's approach and a lightning strike on the launch pad last week had forced NASA to delay the launch.

British Drama Depicts Fictional Bush Shooting
By Adam Pasick
Reuters
LONDON (Aug. 31) - British public broadcaster Channel 4 is courting controversy with what it calls a "shockingly real
" television drama about a fictional assassination of President Bush.

Channel 4, HO, AFP / Getty Images

'Death of a President,' a TV drama set to air in the UK, uses a documentary format and special effects to portray President Bush as the victim of an assasination.

Talk About It: Post Your Thoughts "Death of a President," shot in the form of a documentary, will use a blend of archival footage and computer-generated special effects to portray Bush in October 2007 arriving in Chicago during an anti-war rally.

In the film, Bush is shot to death by a sniper, and the investigation quickly focuses on a Syrian-born man. It will air in October on Channel 4's More4 digital channel, as well as at the Toronto Film Festival in September.

"It's a pointed political examination of what the war on terror is doing to the American body politic," said More4 boss Peter Dale at a press conference on Thursday.

Promotional materials described the program as "a thought-provoking critique of the contemporary U.S. political landscape."

Dale acknowledged that the program will be controversial but maintained that it was a sophisticated work meant to spur debate.

"I'm sure there will be people upset by it," he said. "I hope people will see the intention as a good one."

Channel 4, which is publicly owned but funded by advertising, was criticized last week by outgoing ITV Chief Executive Charles Allen for its reliance on reality TV shows and "shock docs."

More4's autumn schedule also includes "The Trial of Tony
Blair," a satirical program about the future resignation of the British Prime Minister.

U.S. Beats Japan 2-1 to Win Little League World Series
Monday, August 28, 2006
Baseball Head

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Cody Walker hit a two-run homer off ace Go Matsumoto, Ryan Carter struck out 11, and Columbus, Ga., beat Kawaguchi City, Japan, 2-1 to win the Little League World Series championship game on Monday.
Slugger 2
It was the second straight American victory in the Series, coming on the heels of Ewa Beach, Hawaii's win over a team from Willemstad, Curacao last year. The United States hadn't captured back-to-back Little League titles with different teams since 1982-83 when Kirkland, Wash., and Marietta, Ga., celebrated in Williamsport.
Long Beach, Calif., was a repeat champion in 1992-93 — the first victory awarded afte r a Phillipines squad was stripped of the title for using over-age players.
Wave
Matsumoto had devastated hitters in this tournament with his powerful fastball. It was potent again for him on Monday, except for Walker's shot in the third inning that followed a base running blunder.
Carter overcame a bout of wildness in the sixth and final inning. With two runners on, he got Ryoya Sato to hit a weak bouncer to Josh Lester at second for the last out of the game.
That prompted the Georgia-leaning crowd to erupt in cheers, chant "USA! USA!" and wave American flags. Columbus players rushed toward Lester, skipping up and down in celebration and tossing their gloves to the sky.
Then they posed on the mound for a group picture with a banner that proclaimed them "World Series Champions" as their gloves were strewn across the infield.
Columbus' rally was nearly thwarted by Carter's mistake on the bases.
Carter took off from first on Lester's single to center but didn't heed the stop sign thrown by manager Randy Morris at third. He was nailed at home for the second out, sliding into the catcher's shin guards well short of the plate.
It didn't matter, because Walker then hit his opposite-field shot over the right field fence. Lester pumped his fist as he rounded third, and Morris got so excited as Walker circled the bases that his hat fell off. Jubilant teammates greeted Walker at the plate.
A sign in the Columbus cheering section read, "Georgia, Not Just Peaches." Now, it's also home to the best team in Little League baseball.
Japan is known for its power hitting, having hit 11 homers in its first five games of the Series, including four by Seigo Yada and two by Matsumoto. The international champions used small ball to score their only run in the third inning on Monday.
Yada hit a one-out bouncer into center. Pinch-hitter Yusuke Inuzuka missed on two bunt attempts but advanced Yada to second with a slow grounder down the third-base line.
Matsumoto, who struck out nine and walked two, followed with a high chopper up the middle that drove in Yada.
Rain forced the title game to be pushed back from Sunday, and organizers then moved the starting time ahead by three hours after weather forecasts showed another chance of rain in the evening.
The title game has been rescheduled just once before, in 1990, when rain forced San-Hua, Chinese Taipei, and Shippensburg, Pa., to play one day later than scheduled. Chinese Taipei won 9-0.
Columbus and Marietta are the only teams from Georgia to reach the Little League World Series.

SPACE SHUTTLE ATLANTIS LAUNCH SCRUBBED TIL TUESDAY OR LATER

UPDATE, MONDAY, AUGUST 28TH, 2006
DUE TO THE UPCOMING HURRICANE WEATHER WARNING NASA HAS DECIDED TO REMOVE THE SHUTTLE FROM THE PAD AND TRANSPORT IT BACK TO THE HANGER BUILDING TO PROTECT IT. NO FURTHER NOTICE AS TO WHEN THEY MAY RESCHEDULE THE LAUNCH.

NASA Weighs Another Shuttle Launch Delay
By MIKE SCHNEIDER, AP
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (Aug. 27) - The chances of NASA launching the space shuttle Atlantis this week diminished by the hour Sunday as the space agency worried about the effect of a lightning strike at the launch pad and the threat of Hurricane Ernesto.

APRain clouds obscure the top of the Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center.
NASA leaned toward delaying the launch until Tuesday to give engineers more time to figure out if the lightning strike Friday damaged the spacecraft's solid fuel rocket boosters.
However, the threat of Hurricane Ernesto was diminishing the chances of a shuttle launch for later in the week.
A new National Hurricane Center forecast at 11 a.m. put the eye of Ernesto on Florida's west coast, due west of the Kennedy Space Center, on Thursday morning. NASA hurricane policy is to move shuttles back to the protection of the massive Vehicle Assembly Building before a storm hits with wind greater than 45 mph, but it takes nearly two days to roll a shuttle off the launch pad safely.
That lessens the possibility of a Tuesday launch, NASA spokesman Bruce Buckingham said.
No decision was to be made until after a 5 p.m. hurricane center updated forecast, NASA spokesman George Diller said.
The launch was originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon, but NASA pushed it back to Monday so engineers and technicians could have more time to determine if ground and flight systems were affected by Friday's lightning.
There were no immediate indications that any damage was caused by the lightning bolt, one of the most powerful recorded at a Kennedy Space Center launch pad. Rather than hitting the shuttle directly it struck a wire attached to a tower used to protect the spacecraft from such strikes - but it created an electrical field around the vehicle.
The solid rocket booster system wasn't powered up at the time so engineers didn't get enough data about its effect on the boosters, which provide the main thrust to lift the shuttle off the launch pad, said NASA spokesman Bruce Buckingham.
Atlantis' planned mission is the first of 15 flights scheduled to finish constructing the half-built space station before the cargo-carrying shuttles are retired in 2010. Construction has been on hiatus since the 2003 Columbia disaster, which killed seven astronauts.

FOX NEWS REPORTERS RELEASED BY PALESTINIANS

Captors Release Two FOX News Journalists Kidnapped in Gaza Aug. 14

Sunday, August 27, 2006

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — Two FOX News journalists were released by their kidnappers Sunday, nearly two weeks after they were taken hostage in the Gaza Strip.

The freeing of FOX correspondent Steve Centanni, 60, and cameraman Olaf Wiig, 36, ends the longest-running drama involving foreign hostages in Gaza.

The two journalists were dropped off at Gaza City's Beach Hotel by Palestinian security officials and appeared to be in good health. A tearful Centanni embraced a Palestinian journalist briefly as he entered, then rushed upstairs as Wiig followed.

Centanni, in a phone interview shortly after his release, said "I'm fine. I'm just so happy to be free."

He said he was so emotional because he was out and alive.

"There were times when I thought 'I'm dead,' and I'm not," Centanni said. "I'm fine. I'm so very happy."

He recounted how he and Wiig were pulled out of their car on August 14 and taken at gunpoint into another car. The kidnappers blindfolded them and handcuffed their hands behind their backs with plastic ties. They were then transferred to another car and driven to a building that they later learned was a garage.

"We were pushed down onto the dirt-covered concrete floor and we were forced to life face down with our handcuffs on," Centanni said.

"Olaf was in the same room with me. Our shoulders were wrenched back, very painful."

Both of the men were forced to convert to Islam at gunpoint, Centanni said.

"We were forced to convert to Islam at gunpoint," Centanni told FOX News. "Don't get me wrong here. I have the highest respect for Islam, and I learned a lot of good things about it, but it was something we felt we had to do because they had the guns, and we didn't know what the hell was going on."

Centanni's brother, Ken, spoke to FOX News directly after the news was released.

"It's just a tremendous amount of relief, overwhelming relief," he said.

Later Sunday, Centanni and Wiig appeared before reporters, then traveled to the Erez crossing into Israel to leave Gaza.

"I want to thank everybody. I am happy to be here. I hope that this never scares a single journalist away from coming to Gaza to cover the story because the Palestinian people are very beautiful and kind hearted," Centanni told reporters. "The world needs to know more about them. Don't be discouraged."

Wiig also said he was worried that the kidnapping would scare off reporters.

"My biggest concern really is that as a result of what happened to us foreign journalists will be discouraged from coming to tell the story and that would be a great tragedy for the people of Palestine," Wiig said. "You guys need us on the streets, and you need people to be aware of the story."

Wiig's wife, Anita McNaught, thanked Palestinian officials and FOX News for their efforts in getting the men released. The men refused to take questions.

Before that, the two journalists made a joint appearance with Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas. Haniyeh, Centanni and Wiig sat in a circle of chairs at the Beach Hotel. Wiig was also accompanied by his wife.

The day had begun with promises by senior Palestinian officials that the two would be released in coming hours.

At the same time, before the journalists' release, a new video was released, showing Wiig and Centanni dressed in beige Arab-style robes. Wiig, of New Zealand, delivered an anti-Western speech, his face expressionless and his tone halting. The kidnappers claimed both men had converted to Islam.

The journalists had been seized in Gaza City on Aug. 14 by a previously unknown group calling itself the Holy Jihad Brigades. However, senior Palestinian security officials said Sunday the name was a front for local militants, and that Palestinian authorities had known the identity of the kidnappers from the start.

Haniyeh also confirmed the kidnappers were from Gaza, squashing speculation that Al Qaeda had directed the abduction. "The kidnappers have no link to Al Qaeda or any other organization or faction," Haniyeh said. "Al Qaeda as an organization does not exist in the Gaza Strip."

It remained unclear whether the kidnappers had ties to Hamas or the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a violent offshoot of Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement. A third group, the Popular Resistance Committees, claimed Sunday it had helped mediate the release of the journalists.

In chaotic Gaza, gunmen often change their affiliation or form splinter groups. Their agendas are often driven by personal issues, including jobs and power for their clans, rather than by ideology.

In the past two years, Palestinian militants have seized more than two dozen foreigners, usually to settle personal scores, but released them unharmed within hours. The holding of the FOX journalists had been the longest.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Report: Palestinian Group Claims Kidnapping of Journalists
Wednesday, August 23, 2006

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — A previously unheard of Palestinian group, the Holy Jihad Brigades, claimed responsibility Wednesday for kidnapping a FOX News cameraman and correspondent, Al-Jazeera reported.

The Palestinian news agency Ramattan said the group set a 72-hour deadline to swap them for Palestinian prisoners.

American correspondent Steve Centanni, 60, and cameraman Olaf Wiig, 36, of New Zealand were kidnapped Aug. 14 from their TV van near the Palestinian security services headquarters in Gaza City.

Although Palestinian militant groups have often seized foreigners, including members of the media, this is the longest any have been held.

Woods Cruises to 12th Major Victory
Tiger Dominates Final Round at PGA Championship
By NANCY ARMOUR
AP Sports
MEDINAH, Ill. (Aug. 20) - No tears, no sweat.One month after an emotional victory in the British Open, Tiger Woods won the PGA Championship with a ruthless display of efficiency Sunday, closing with a 4-under 68 for a five-shot victory and his 12th career major.

Tiger Closes in on Nicklaus
He became the first player in history to go consecutive years winning at least two majors. And now, only Jack Nicklaus and his 18 professional majors stand in the way of Woods becoming golf's greatest champion.Woods started with a 10-foot birdie to seize the lead. He finished with a tap-in par to match his scoring record at the PGA Championship, finishing at 18-under 270 and walking off the 18th green with a broad smile.That wasn't the case at Hoylake last month, where Woods sobbed on his caddie's shoulder after winning his first major since his father died in May. He paid tribute to Earl Woods again, his voice steady this time. He even managed a wisecrack about how his father taught him to putt."I kept saying all day, 'Just putt to the picture.' He actually knew what he was talking about," Woods said.This celebration was routine. Woods plucked the ball out of the cup and put it in his pocket, thrust his fists in the air and gave a thumbs-up sign as he walked over to pick up the Wanamaker Trophy.

"This is sweet. This is really sweet," he said.He became the first player to win the PGA Championship twice on the same course. Woods outlasted Sergio Garcia by one shot at Medinah in 1999. This one was never close.Woods twice made birdie putts over 40 feet, and the margin of victory might have been greater had he not aimed for the middle of the green and lagged for par over the closing holes.Shaun Micheel won the battle for second place, about the only drama on a sunny afternoon outside Chicago.Even the race for the Ryder Cup fizzled, with no change in the standings.So much for those worries about Woods after he missed the cut at the U.S. Open. He now has won his last three tournaments, the first time he has done that in five years."Jack Nicklaus, he's the only other guy I've ever seen who looks more comfortable leading on the back nine of a major than playing the first hole of a tournament," Chris DiMarco said. "And that's pretty scary. He just puts the hammer down."Nicklaus was home in North Palm Beach, Fla., watching his grandchildren play golf, but he saw enough of the final round on television to appreciate how easy Woods made it look."He's that good," Nicklaus said in an email. "The guy is playing just great golf, terrific golf. From what I saw, he certainly was in total command."Nicklaus won his 18 majors over 25 years. Woods has won 12 in his first 10 years on the PGA Tour, and there doesn't appear to be anyone capable of stopping him.Luke Donald was tied for the lead going into the final round at Medinah and didn't make a single birdie, closing with a 74 to finish in a tie for third at 12-under 276 with Adam Scott (67) and Garcia (70).

AOL's own Kevin Maguire and Craig Thomas were both at Medinah following Tiger's latest run at history. Here are some of their musings from course-side:· "Tiger is the most focused person I’ve ever seen do anything. Ever. Any job. Any game. Any anything. The man doesn’t get rattled."-- The Best That Ever Lived · "When Tiger was in the press room answering questions about today's round of golf, a reporter from China asked Tiger if he liked golf more than children. I'm sure something was lost in translation. It had to be - right?"-- Phil Hearts Tiger · "While the media get as close as anyone to the golfers during these golf tournaments, even Tiger’s wife had to stand on the hill behind the 18th green to try to get a glimpse of her husband."-- Inside Observations
"He's just too good," Micheel said after a 69, although he never got within five shots of Woods after the fourth hole. "Unless you're at the top of your game, you just can't play with him."Woods is now 12-0 when he has at least a share of the 54-hole lead."Tiger just doesn't back up," said Steve Stricker, who made a late bid for the Ryder Cup. "He doesn't let anybody get close to him, especially in the last round."So dominant was this performance that Woods made only three bogeys the entire week, including a harmless one on the par-3 17th hole over Lake Kadijah when he was playing it safe. All that cost him was the scoring record in relation to par. He settled for 18 under, the same score he posted at Valhalla in 2000.It was the fifth major that Woods won by at least five shots. He now has won his 12 majors by a combined 56 shots, while Nicklaus won his 18 majors by 44 shots.That Woods has never lost a 54-hole lead in a major was enough to make some believe it was due to happen, especially on a soft course yielding low scores and a strong cast of contenders behind him.He went 10 years before missing a cut in a major. Would this be the one he blew in the final round?No.U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy found water on the second hole and three-putted from 8 feet on No. 3 to disappear. Garcia chunked a wedge and made bogey on the par-5 seventh to stall his momentum. Mike Weir got within one shot of Woods at No. 5, but he couldn't keep up the pace and fell back to a 73.Donald was in contention at a major for the first time, but not for long.They were tied atop the leaderboard and in the wardrobe department - both wore a red shirt - as thousands crammed in around the putting green, the first tee and down both sides of the fairway. Donald had equal support, not only from winning an NCAA title at Northwestern, but sticking around to make Chicago his home.Cheers of "Luuuuuuke" followed him toward the first tee, but those hopes faded quickly. Woods hit 7-iron into 10 feet, and kept his head so still over his birdie putt that he didn't look up until it was inches from dropping for birdie.No one caught him the rest of the day.Donald caught a bad break when his ball landed in a muddy divot on No. 4, leading to his first bogey in 40 holes. He missed a 5-foot birdie on the par-5 fifth, and that effectively ended his tournament.The only drama left was the U.S. Ryder Cup team, and that also turned into a snoozer.

Tim Herron needed a two-way tie for seventh and was looking good with two birdies on his first five holes, but he followed that with two straight bogeys and never recovered, shooting 73. Stricker made a late surge, needing to finish third. He got as high as a tie for sixth until the birdies dried up, he finished with a bogey for a 69 and tied for seventh.Davis Love III finished with three straight bogeys, completing a 73-76 weekend.The top 10 players who earned a spot on the team were Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, David Toms, Chad Campbell, DiMarco, Vaughn Taylor, J.J. Henry, Zach Johnson and Brett Wetterich.Tom Lehman will make his two captain's picks Monday morning, with Stewart Cink likely to be one of them. Cink was 12th in the standings and closed with a 69 while paired with vice captain Corey Pavin.The question was whether he would consider Lucas Glover for his raw skill or Love for his experience, or perhaps someone else.

ATTACK OF THE KILLER RICE ?

Frankenfood Strikes Again!
U.S. rice contaminated, government says
WASHINGTON - Some long-grain rice in the United States has been contaminated with a genetically engineered variety not approved for human consumption, the government says.
"Based upon the information we have seen," the contaminated rice "is safe," Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns said, adding he did not know where the contaminated rice was found or how widespread it was in the U.S. food supply.
The rice, known as LLRICE 601, was engineered by Bayer CropScience of Monheim, Germany, to make it resistant to a weed killer made by the agricultural giant Aventis, the Washington Post reported Saturday.
Bayer never got LLRICE 601 approved for U.S. marketing, but two other varieties of rice with the same gene were approved, so 601 is probably safe too, Johanns said.
Bayer said it was "cooperating closely" with the government in the investigation.
Johanns acknowledged the discovery could hurt rice sales - especially exports, which are worth close to $1 billion a year. Link

Of all the problems in the world today, the 'debate' over genetically altered food is the most specious and over-hyped. Gregor Mendell, the monk who discovered 'heredity/genetics', did so by manipulating the heredity of peas by introducing various different strains into a line (genetic engineering). Cavemen who domesticed wolves into dogs, selectively bred for certain traits and de-selected certain other traits - giving us the myriad of canines we have today. Genetic mutation happens all the time. A neutrino, passing through the Earth, on its way to the other side of the Universe, may just happen to collide with a little piece of genetic material and thereby alter an entire species. Mutation has been going on since BEFORE life began. That is HOW life began. The greenfreaks and ecoweenies would have us believe, that somehow, GM foods are the Devil's work. Dr. Frankenstein's creation in the vegetable patch. There are starving nations, such as Bangladesh, that refuse GM foods as aid. The whole damned argument is complete and utter bullshit. And, believe it or not, comes down, once again, to money. See, GM crops are usually hybrids and therefore cannot reproduce, That means the evil seed supplier can maintain a monopoly on their availabilty. And there is evidence, that once a GM crop gets into the neighborhood, there IS some cross pollination that invariably happens. I have yet to see any evidence that this causes a natural plant to become sterile, and in fact, I find that possibility counter intuitive. While the GM plant may be engineered to survive certain specific situations or conditions, it is, by definition, a tenuous creation - it cannot even reproduce itself. And as I have already mentioned, this sort of exchange between species DOES take place in nature. Consider the bear recently killed in Canada. A Grizzly/Polar bear mix. Or consider the horse/moose critter I wrote about recently. Just the other day, an animal was killed in Maine, which is suspected of being a wolf/dog or coyote mix. All of these occurred out there in 'NATURE'. Had any of these mixes been viable and survived and thrived - that would become the dominant strain.
So the next time some bozo laments genetic engineering - tell him to go fuck a monkey.
The resultant offspring can't be any dumber.
I ain't worried about Frankenfoods - I'm concerned about Frankenfools.

BREAKING NEWS !! ARREST MADE IN THE CASE OF JONBENET RAMSEY. Man in Thialand has confessed. HE IS ON THE WAY BACK TO THE USA. Stay tuned to your News station as I know it will be all over TV and the net. It seems he had been emailing Patsy Ramseyfor quite sometime before her death. The information about the emails were known by the FBI and they were seeking this guy and she knew this before she died. He had sent emails to Patsy telling her things about the murder that only the murderer himself would have know. God bless Mr. Ramsey & I know that Patsy is in heaven looking down at all that is going on. And..she is with her precious daughter now. I will post more here later as the case develops.

Below is a copy of a post I made a couple of months ago. It has a copy of the ransome note. Read on. So, all and all she did not go to her grave not knowing something about the suspect after all. That's a good thing in itself.
Here are a couple of links on the case as well.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ !
Patsey Ramsey died today of ovarian cancer. I have never really known what to think about this case. There were so many turns and twists along the way that it became a WHO DONE IT.
If Patsy ever knew anything about her daughter's death then she took it to the grave with her.
This is a copy of the ransom note that was released a few years ago.
This is a copy of the ransom note recovered in the JonBenet Ramsey murder case. It was released on September 8th by District Attorney Alex Hunter, whose office is probing the December 1996 murder of the Boulder, Colorado girl. In a press release, Hunter asked the public to contact Boulder police if they recognized the "handwriting, phrasing, or any aspect" of the note.
