TIGER WOODS WINS THE BRITISH OPEN TODAY~

Tiger Woods Wins His Second Consecutive British Open Title
Sunday, July 23, 2006

More pics below. Congratulations TIGER !!

HOYLAKE, England — Tiger Woods captured his second consecutive British Open, his third overall and 11th major on Sunday with a 5-under 67 to finish on 18-under 270.
Woods was two shots clear of Chris DiMarco, who shot a 68. Ernie Els placed third, five strokes behind after a round of 71. Jim Furyk was six strokes behind after a 71 with Hideto Tanihara and Sergio Garcia both finishing seven off the pace.
Woods' triumph at Royal Liverpool made him the first player to win back-to-back Opens since Tom Watson in 1982-83.
Visit FOXSports.com for complete British Open coverage.
Woods tapped in for par for a two-shot victory over DiMarco, and pent-up emotions tore through his lips as he screamed "Yes!"
He then buried his head in caddie Steve Williams' shoulder and sobbed, his chest heaving in a burst of emotion brought on by the recent death of father, Earl.
Woods tied Walter Hagen for 11 majors, still seven behind Jack Nicklaus' record 18. The victory also meant that Woods now has a 7-0 record in majors where he has led going into the final round.
Woods was strong down the stretch, with birdies on 14, 15 and 16 to hold off DiMarco.
For the fourth day in a row, players went out in warm, sunny conditions, this time with a gentle breeze blowing across Royal Liverpool links, which have been baked by weeks of hot, dry weather.
Woods parred the first four holes but was close to birdies with long range putts. But he moved two ahead with a 20-foot eagle putt at the par 5 fifth and increased his lead to three with a birdie at 10, the easiest hole on the course.
But his lead was cut to one when he missed the green at the 12th to wind up with a bogey 5 after DiMarco had rolled in a birdie putt for a two at the 13th.
DiMarco was in trouble at 14 when he found the rough off the tee and needed a 50-footer to make par. He made it to stay one behind and keep the pressure on the defending champion.
Playing behind DiMarco, Woods got his second shot at the same hole to eight feet from the flag and he made that for a birdie to move two clear.
Although DiMarco made birdie at 16, Woods responded with another at 15 to stay two ahead. He moved to another easy par 5 and made his third birdie in a row to move to 18 under.
Chasing a second Open title to go with triumph at Muirfield in 2002 and his two U.S. Open titles, Els moved level with Woods after a birdie at the fifth. But bogeys at eight and 10 dropped him back and he never recovered.
Garcia, Woods' playing partner starting a shot behind, quickly fell out of contention and was seven off the lead by the turn. The Spaniard, still chasing his first major, was unable to stay in touch and bogeyed the second and third by missing putts of six and three feet.
He also missed 10-footers at eight and nine and reached the turn at 8-under, seven off the lead. After carding 29 for the outward nine on Saturday, he covered the same nine in 39 on Sunday.
Masters champion Phil Mickelson, way back with 10 strokes to make up on the leaders, finished with a 2-under 70 and a 5-under total of 283.

RAIN SONGS. LOTS OF THEM..:o)

http://www.lacarte.org/songs/rain/

Take along stroll down memory lane, no matter what your era or your preferred style of music, browsing almost 800 song titles relating to rain and rainy things, including over 50 named just 'Rain.' You will probably be surprised how many of these songs from American popular culture you know.
.
This is not an attempt to catalog every possible song that merely happens to make a passing reference to rain, as so many do apparently because it's the first thing the authors think of to rhyme with 'pain.' There are, in fact, according to The Muze (muze.com), over 5,000 albums containing at least one song with the word 'rain' in their title, just since 1960. The Virtual Flood, by contrast, hopes only to cover those songs which are likely to be known by wide audiences, and are significantly involved with rain, whether the word is in their title or not.

Space Shuttle DISCOVERY~LANDING TODAY~9:14 AM~SAFE !!!

UPDATE !!!... HERE SHE COMES.... whoo hoo... SAFE LANDING!! WELCOME HOME GUYS & GIRLS !!
9:13 AM....DISCOVERY IS ON THE WAY IN. LANDING AT KENNEDY SPACE CENTER IN FLORIDA AT 9:14 AM EASTERN STANDARD TIME. DUE TO THE WEATHER THE ONLY CHANGE MADE WAS THE DIRECTION THE SPACE SHUTTLE WILL COME IN AT RUNWAY 15..READ ON BELOW.GOOD LUCK GUYS!!
OVER AND OUT..

Space Shuttle Discovery Cleared to Land
Monday, July 17, 2006

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Space shuttle Discovery and its crew of six streaked toward Earth on Monday, wrapping up a successful mission that put NASA back in the space-station construction business.

All that remained for NASA to declare total victory, for the first time since before the 2003 Columbia disaster, was a safe landing. Discovery was due to touch down on the Kennedy Space Center runway at 9:14 a.m.

Mission Control waited until almost the last minute before notifying the astronauts that the weather was good enough to come home.

The shuttle, with commander Steven Lindsey and co-pilot Mark Kelly at the controls, plunged out of orbit an hour before touchdown with the firing of the braking rockets, and began the hourlong descent.

The flight path had the spacecraft coming in from the south, swooping over the Pacific, Yucatan Peninsula, Gulf of Mexico and across Florida to cap a 5.3 million-mile journey that began on the Fourth of July.

When Mission Control woke up the astronauts just after 1 a.m. EDT, Lindsey made it clear that his crew, weary after a 13-day mission that he said was the busiest of his four fights, wanted to come.

"Hopefully, with good weather we will be on the ground" later Monday, Lindsey told Mission Control as he woke up.

The Kennedy Space Center in Florida is the only landing site NASA has called up for the day. Astronauts doing reconnaissance weather flights reported no problems, but NASA was keeping an eye on showers to the northeast that were moving toward the landing strip.

This would be the first landing at Kennedy in nearly four years. Last year's flight of Discovery, after weather delays, came down at Edwards Air Force Base in California, the backup site.

Landing at Edwards costs NASA about $1.7 million more because it has to get the shuttle back to Florida.

As he went to bed Sunday evening, Lindsey said he hoped that Monday he'd wake up and be able to walk on the ground later that day.

The shuttle itself was cleared Sunday for landing. After seven different inspection efforts, engineers and astronauts couldn't find any damage to the shuttle's heat shield. A small leak with one of three power units that control braking and maneuvering for landing did not appear to be a big deal, NASA mission managers decided Sunday.

Discovery successfully completed all its assigned tasks, including making sure repairs to the shuttle external tank were successful, fixing a rail car on the international space station, and bringing the station a new crew member.

Mission control woke the crew with the song "The Astronaut" by Something Corporate.

Besides Lindsey and Kelly, Discovery's crew included mission specialists Mike Fossum, Lisa Nowak, Stephanie Wilson and Piers Sellers. Astronaut Thomas Reiter, who rode up in Discovery, remained at the international space station for a six-month stay.

The Mission Control Center told the STS-121 crew Sunday morning that engineers have cleared Space Shuttle Discovery for landing after completing a review of post-docking inspection data.

The crew members received the word while eating lunch. They prepared Sunday for landing by stowing items, testing engines and checking out shuttle systems.

The astronauts took a break from their work to talk to reporters with CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC and the Fox News Channel.

Landing is set for 9:14 a.m. EDT Monday at the Kennedy Space Center, Fla. The crew is scheduled to fire the shuttle’s engines at 8:07 a.m. to begin Discovery’s descent to Florida.

A second landing opportunity in Florida also is available for Monday. The crew would fire the engines at 9:43 a.m. for a landing at 10:50 a.m. Weather forecasts call for a chance of showers at the landing site. Flight controllers do not plan to consider any landing site other than Florida on Monday.

Discovery delivered supplies, equipment and a new Expedition 13 crew member to the International Space Station. During three spacewalks, the crew performed maintenance on the station’s mobile transporter and tested orbiter heat shield repair techniques.

STATUS REPORT: STS-121-25

STS-121 MCC Status Report #25

Discovery is targeted for a landing at 8:14 a.m. CDT Monday at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. For that landing, Discovery's engines would be fired at 7:07 a.m. CDT Monday to begin its descent. A second opportunity is available for Discovery to land at Kennedy on Monday, beginning the descent with an engine firing at 8:43 a.m. CDT and leading to a touchdown in Florida at 9:50 a.m. CDT. Flight managers do not plan to consider other shuttle landing sites on Monday.

The weather forecast for landing on Monday calls for a chance of rain in the vicinity of Kennedy's shuttle runway that could be unacceptable for Discovery's landing.

Discovery Commander Steve Lindsey and Pilot Mark Kelly checked the shuttle landing systems and steering jets early today. A test run of one of the three generators that power the shuttle hydraulics found that auxiliary power unit operating normally. A minute leak in that system has remained at expected levels. All three units are planned to be run as normal for landing.

The astronauts spent the rest of their planned final full day in orbit stowing gear and securing the shuttle for the trip home. Key events leading up to Discovery's first landing opportunity on Monday include:

4:27 a.m. CDT -- Discovery's payload bay doors are closed
6:07 a.m. CDT -- Discovery's astronauts begin to strap in for landing
6:48 a.m. CDT -- Mission Control "go" or "no-go" for the deorbit engine firing

The next STS-121 mission status report will be issued after Discovery's landing, or earlier if events warrant.

Landing 101

Follow along with the landing! Whether the space shuttle lands at the prime landing site at Kennedy Space Center in Florida or its backup landing site at Edwards Air Force Base in California, the Virtual Launch Control Center is the only place online to get breaking information directly from NASA.

When it is time to return to Earth, the orbiter is rotated tail-first into the direction of travel to prepare for another firing of the orbital maneuvering system engines. This firing is called the deorbit burn. Time of ignition (TIG) is usually about an hour before landing. The burn lasts three to four minutes and slows the shuttle enough to begin its descent.

Below are some of the key events that take place at each milestone prior to touchdown.

Note: Times, distances and speeds can vary according to a variety of factors such as mission inclination, trajectory and glide slope.

TIG-4 hours
Crew members begin preparations for landing. The orbiter's onboard computers are configured for entry, as is the hydraulic system that powers the orbiter's aerosurfaces -- its rudder speed brake and wing elevons.

TIG-3 hours
The payload bay doors are closed. Mission Control gives the commander the "go" for Ops 3, the portion of the orbiter's flight control software that manages entry and landing.

TIG-2 hours
Starting with the commander and pilot, the flight crew members don their orange launch and entry suits and strap into their seats.

In the foreground is the parking apron with the orbiter mate/demate tower, the hangar and other storage facilities, and the tow-way stretching from the runway to the lower right. TIG-1 hour
Mission Control gives the "go" for deorbit burn.

DEORBIT BURN
The orbiter and crew are officially on their way home.

During reentry and landing, the orbiter is not powered by engines. Instead, it flies like a high-tech glider, relying first on its steering jets and then its aerosurfaces to control the airflow around it.

Landing-30 minutes
Roughly half an hour after the deorbit burn, the orbiter will begin to encounter the effects of the atmosphere. Called entry interface, this point usually takes place at an altitude of about 80 miles, and more than 5,000 statute miles from the landing site.

Early in reentry, the orbiter's orientation is controlled by the aft steering jets, part of the reaction control system. But during descent, the vehicle flies less like a spacecraft and more like an aircraft. Its aerosurfaces -- the wing flaps and rudder -- gradually become active as air pressure builds. As those surfaces become usable, the steering jets turn off automatically.

To use up excess energy, the orbiter performs a series of four steep banks, rolling over as much as 80 degrees to one side or the other, to slow down. The series of banks gives the shuttle's track toward landing an appearance similar to an elongated letter "S."

As the orbiter slices through the atmosphere faster than the speed of sound, the sonic boom -- really, two distinct claps less than a second apart -- can be heard across parts of Florida, depending on the flight path.

Landing-5 minutes
The orbiter's velocity eases below the speed of sound about 25 statute miles from the runway. As the orbiter nears the Shuttle Landing Facility, the commander takes manual control, piloting the vehicle to touchdown on one of two ends of the SLF.

As it aligns with the runway, the orbiter begins a steep descent with the nose angled as much as 19 degrees down from horizontal. This glide slope is seven times steeper than the average commercial airliner landing. During the final approach, the vehicle drops toward the runway 20 times faster than a commercial airliner as its rate of descent and airspeed increase. At less than 2,000 feet above the ground, the commander raises the nose and slows the rate of descent in preparation for touchdown.

Landing-15 seconds
The main and nose landing gear are deployed and locked in place.

Touchdown!
The orbiter's main landing gear touches down on the runway at 214 to 226 miles per hour, followed by the nose gear. The drag chute is deployed, and the orbiter coasts to a stop.

Discovery Inspection Completed, No Serious Damage Found
HOUSTON — While astronauts set a record for using robotics in space, NASA engineers on Friday focused on a slow leak aboard space shuttle Discovery that, if it worsens, could cause a first-of-its-kind shutdown of one of three hydraulic systems during Monday's landing attempt.
John Shannon, the shuttle program's deputy manager, said the problem was unlikely to affect the shuttle's return to Earth, but engineers were closely monitoring the leak in the pipeline of an auxiliary power unit that controls hydraulic steering and braking maneuvers.
It is leaking at a rate of "about six drops per hour," and could be leaking harmless nitrogen or flammable hydrazine fuel, Shannon said.
• Click here to visit FOXNews.com's Space Center.
The leak is more likely nitrogen, but there is no way of knowing that, so NASA is treating the problem as if the leak were fuel, he said.
If it is fuel, the current rate is still 100,000 times slower than what would cause a fire, he said.
So if nothing changes, the shuttle will land normally, Shannon said.
Just in case, NASA will turn on the power unit with the leak early Sunday as part of its normal testing and then see if the leak rate changes.

If it does, NASA may burn off the hydrazine and shut down the power unit before the shuttle returns to Earth to eliminate any fire hazard, Shannon said.
If that happens, the shuttle would land with just its two other power units for the first time in the spacecraft's history.
The shuttle is certified to land normally with two power units, with the only change requiring pyrotechnics to lower landing gear, Shannon said. The shuttle could land with only one power unit, but that would be more difficult, he said.
Also Friday, the shuttle and the international space station set an informal record for robotic activity during a mission. Discovery's crew used the shuttle's robotic arm for yet another examination of the shuttle heat shield.
It was just another day in space for Discovery's robot operators Stephanie Wilson and Lisa Nowak, whom Mission Control called the "robo chicks."
Hours later, minor problems with the space station's robotic arm put Wilson and Nowak behind schedule on their big inspection of the day, looking at the shuttle's left wing for damage from dust-sized meteorites and small pieces of space junk.
The space debris now includes a spatula that astronaut Piers Sellers accidentally let go of during a spacewalk Wednesday. NASA said the spatula posed no risk to the space station or shuttle.
Sellers joked Friday that he would go to Home Depot to replace it upon his return.
"I'm sure it will come out of my pay," he said.
The inspection used a laser sensor attached to the extension that doubles the length of the 50-foot robotic arm.
When Mission Control praised Discovery for getting the inspection finished, commander Steve Lindsey answered: "Robo chicks take care of it again."
Engineers will not know until Saturday if the shuttle gets its expected all-clear for landing. The shuttle undocks from the space station that day, and the robotic arm will be hauled out again to look at the left wing and the nose cap — something easier to do when detached from the space station.
When asked about being dubbed robo chicks, Nowak and Wilson laughed.
"We've actually learned a lot while we've been up here," Nowak told CBS News. "We trained for a couple of years before we got up here."
Nowak and Wilson performed flawlessly at the task, which is like controlling a video game stick and being an air traffic controller at the same time, said NASA robotics operator Simon Aziz.
"It's a piloting skill," Aziz said. "You're flying the joystick and the operator is trying to absorb information off all the screens."

Discovery's Astronauts Enter Shuttle for Historic Fourth of July Launch
Tuesday, July 04, 2006

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Discovery's astronauts strapped into their seats Tuesday in preparation for the first space shuttle liftoff on Independence Day. After two weather delays and then a debate over safety when a crack was spotted in the fuel tank's foam insulation, officials decided the launch was a go.
"Steve, happy Fourth of July!" a launch controller told Steve Lindsey, Discovery's commander.
The six U.S. astronauts waved small American flags, and European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Reiter gripped a tiny German banner, as they walked toward the launch pad to enter the shuttle. Astronaut Mike Fossum gave a thumbs up and called out: "Hi mom! I love you!"
Click here for FOXNews.com's Space Center.
Tuesday's launch was scheduled to be the first in almost a year, and only the second launch since the Columbia disaster killed seven astronauts in 2003.
Columbia's wing had been hit by a chunk of flyaway foam during liftoff, and that damage caused the shuttle to break apart over Texas on re-entry Feb. 1, 2003. The lingering memories of that heightened fears when the 5-inch crack appeared in the insulating foam on Discovery's external fuel tank Monday.
A 3-inch piece of foam also popped out of the area, which covers an expandable bracket holding a liquid oxygen feed line against the huge external fuel tank. But after several hours of inspections and meetings, officials decided to continue with the launch as planned.

NASA administrator Michael Griffin said Tuesday that the crack wasn't a major concern and that cameras were trained on the area so if ice built up after the super-cold fuel was added, the launch could be delayed. Photographs taken Monday night by an inspection team, using a tiny camera that can be manipulated into tight spaces, showed no further foam damage in the area.

"We establish days, weeks, months in advance the criteria that we have to meet in order to be able to launch. If we don't meet them, we stand down," meaning the shuttle doesn't launch, Griffin told NBC's "Today" show.

"If we get through the list without a problem, we'll see a nice fireworks display," he said.

Another technical problem sprung up Tuesday morning when inspectors discovered they lost backup circuit breakers that control heaters at the joints on both solid rocket boosters. NASA considered sending crews out to repair the problem, but determined to go without the fix because the shuttle remained fully functional and the backups weren't expected to be needed.

NASA managers had decided to go ahead with the launch attempt because of three criteria: They were confident that enough foam was still on the bracket to prevent a large piece of ice from forming; they didn't believe the area would be exposed to extreme heat during ascent; and the area of foam where the piece dropped was still intact.

"They fully have shown that the foam is acceptable and ready to fly," said Bill Gerstenmaier, a NASA associate administrator. "There were no dissenters when we went around the room ... no concerns raised."

Early inspections Tuesday were promising, with no ice buildup overnight in the area where the piece fell off. Fueling was completed in just under three hours, and the forecast improved to an 80 percent chance weather would be favorable for launch — the best odds so far. NASA had scrubbed launch plans Saturday and Sunday as electrically charged clouds loomed over the area.

The 3-inch triangular piece of foam that dropped from the tank is far smaller than the 1-pound foam chunk that brought down Columbia. Gerstenmaier showed reporters the piece of foam, which looked like a wedge of toast.

NASA has spent millions of dollars trying to prevent foam from breaking off at liftoff. Engineers were startled when it broke off Discovery during last year's mission — the first shuttle flight after the Columbia disaster — but it didn't harm the shuttle.

The external tank expanded when the super-cold fuel was drained after Sunday's launch was canceled because of the weather. The ice that formed "pinched" some of that foam, causing the quarter-inch-wide crack and the piece of foam to drop off, officials said.

Griffin decided two weeks ago that the shuttle should go into orbit as planned, despite the concerns of two top agency managers — the top safety officer and chief engineer — who wanted additional repairs to the foam insulation.

But the two agency officials said the foam loss will not threaten the crew because NASA has a plan for the astronauts to move into the international space station if in-orbit inspections find serious damage to the spacecraft. The crew would await rescue 81 days later by a second space shuttle.

The mission for Discovery's crew this time is to test shuttle-inspection techniques, deliver supplies to the international space station and drop off Reiter for a six-month stay.

Patsy Ramsey, thrust into a national spotlight by the unsolved 1996 slaying of her 6-year-old daughter, was remembered yesterday for her strength after JonBenet's murder and, later, a diagnosis of ovarian cancer.

Ramsey often called people who were beginning cancer treatment to offer encouragement, friends said at her funeral.

Only a few references were made to JonBenet's death during the eulogies. Patsy Ramsey died Saturday at age 49.

"We believe this day ... she is in a place where there's no more suffering, no more pain," said Rev. Mike Long, minister of the Roswell United Methodist Church.

After the release of hundreds of colourful balloons, she was buried beside her daughter at a cemetery in Atlanta.

JonBenet was found beaten and strangled in the basement of the family's home in Boulder, Colo., on Dec. 26, 1996. A grand jury investigation in Boulder ended with no indictments.

Patsy Ramsey, a native of West Virginia, was crowned Miss West Virginia in 1977.

JonBenet followed her mother into beauty pageants, and her titles included Little Miss Colorado; Colorado State All-Star Kids Cover Girl; and National Tiny Miss Beauty.

WHAT'S ALL THE FUSS ABOUT WITH STAR JONES

.

I HOPE STAR JONES CONTINUES TO SHINE.

http://www.starjones.com/index.cfm?fa=welcome

I HAVE HEARD ABOUT THE GOINGS ON ABOUT STAR JONES LEAVING THE VIEW. IT'S RIDICULOUS ABOUT ALL THATS BEEN SAID ABOUT THIS INCIDENT. Good grief.

I was reading on the net about things people said about it and I came across one person's comment. I tend to agree.

READ BELOW.

Star, You are a sweetheart. It's a sad day in America when people become so obcessed with how someone lost weight. I do not know what you did to loose weight but I do not care. You look beautiful. It is none of anyones business what it took for you to loose weight. I think that is your business. Rosie O'donnell has always been a big mouth as far as I am concerned. She is jealous that you look so beautiful now. You looked beautiful before as far as that goes. She had no right to make the statement that she did that she did not believe you lost your weight without surgery. It's none of her business whether you did or did not. That's your business as I said. I believe in you and whatever way you lost it is fine by me. It is not for Miss Rosie to make the statement she did. How rude and down right hateful on her part. She will be the downfall of the view. She may think people like her but let me tell you they do not !! I think that Barbara made a mistake in putting Rosie on the show. Just wait and see. I have no feelings about what Rosie does. Its her life. She does nto bother me are effect my life in no way and you should ignore her as well. You have a heck of a lot more going for you than she will ever have ! I do not blame you for not wanting to make up a lie about why you were leaving the view. As far as what they are saying about your wedding. I do not know what all the stir is about that either and do nto care. It was your wedding and whatever people offered to do for you was your business as well. The world is a wild and wooly place these days. No one is exempt from attacks about whatever ! Its sad. I love you to death and I wish you well in anything to want and try to do with the rest of your life. God bless you ! I use to like Barbara Walters when she did 20/20 but I really do nto care for her much anymore as it seems since she started the view she lost her way somehow and has changed. This is just my opinion. Happiness always to you. By the way, just so you will know, I am a white lady of 43 years. I just wanted to express how I saw it all. Good luck in your new life with your wonderful husband !! Keep on shining !!
