Is Howard K. stern a murderer ?
Portrait of a Sociopath
Sound like anyone we know?
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

In the 1830's it was called "moral insanity." By 1900 it was changed to "psychopathic personality."
More recently it has been termed "antisocial personality disorder" in the DSM-III and DSM-IV.
This is the Profile of the Sociopath, listing the common features and descriptions of the behavior of the sociopath:

@ Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.
@ Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as "their right."
@ Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.
@ Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means
and they let nothing stand in their way.
@ Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises.
@ Callousness/Lack of Empathy
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others' feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.
@ Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature
Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others.
@ Irresponsibility/Unreliability
Not concerned about wrecking others' lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.
@ Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic Lifestyle
Tends to move around a lot or makes all encompassing promises for the future, poor work ethic but exploits others effectively.
@ Criminal or Entrepreneurial Versatility
Changes their image as needed to avoid prosecution. Changes life story readily.
@ Incapacity for Love
@ Contemptuous of those who seek to understand them
@ Does not perceive that anything is wrong with them
@ Authoritarian
@ Secretive
@ Paranoid
@ Seeks out situations where their tyrannical behavior will be tolerated, condoned, or admired
@ Has an emotional need to justify their crimes and therefore needs their victim's affirmation (respect, gratitude and love)
@ Exercises despotic control over every aspect of the victim's life
@ Goal of enslavement of their victim(s)
@ Conventional appearance
@ Incapable of real human attachment to another
@ Unable to feel remorse or guilt
@ Extreme narcissism and grandiose
@ Ultimate goal is the creation of a willing victim

The Great American Race~wild photo finish

An amazing race
A hard-charging Kevin Harvick nosed out Mark Martin at the finish line Sunday to win the Daytona 500 in a green-white-checkered finish that included a multiple-car crash on the last lap.

The last few laps of the race....

Harvick edges Martin for Daytona 500 title
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Kevin Harvick nosed out Mark Martin in a frantic wreck-filled finish to win Sunday's Daytona 500.

Martin, making his 23rd attempt at a 500 win, seemed to have victory in hand when a hard-charging Harvick barreled along the outside of Martin to earn his second victory at Daytona International Speedway in two nights. Harvick won Saturday's Busch race -- his first ever victory at Daytona.

As Harvick pushed into the lead, Kyle Busch wiggled behind them and bumped into Matt Kenseth to start a melee. Harvick and Martin raced side by side, waiting for NASCAR to call for a caution. When it finally came, Harvick was barely ahead.

"My go-kart experience over the winter paid off, because I didn't let off the floor and we just kept hitting things and the wall and bouncing off everything,'' Harvick said. "But man, this is the Daytona 500. Can you believe it?''

It took several moments for NASCAR to declare a winner, finally giving it to Harvick and spoiling what would have been the biggest victory of 48-year-old Martin's career.

"I didn't ask for a win in the Daytona 500, I asked for a chance,'' Martin said. "I let it slip away, slip through my fingers, and I'm fine with that.''

It was just the finish NASCAR needed to put racing back in the spotlight after a cheating scandal nearly ruined the Great American Race.

Five teams were busted for breaking the rules during Speedweeks -- including two-time winner Michael Waltrip, who broke the NASCAR code by tampering with his fuel before qualifying.

It put the sport in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, and NASCAR had to ratchet up its penalty process to prevent its premier event from turning into a joke.

Finishes like this one might fix everything.

Martin led 26 laps and was out front when a five-car accident brought racing to a standstill with five laps to go. It made for an agonizing 11 minutes, 39 seconds for Martin, who could do nothing but sit idly in his car trying to plot his strategy during the stoppage.

When racing resumed with two laps to go, Martin seemingly needed only to hold off Kyle Busch in a sprint to the finish. He weaved high and then low to block Busch's attempts, which may have distracted him from Harvick.

Running in his own high line, Harvick charged hard on the outside and was side-by-side with Martin when Busch triggered the accident. Neither driver let up as they charged ahead waiting for NASCAR to call it.

New-look NASCAR wants to lap its critics
Car of Tomorrow, foreign-born driver among '07 changes

Buckle up, race fans, for a season that promises to be like nothing ever seen before.

With the mandated Car of Tomorrow, changes to the Chase for the championship, Toyota's arrival, ESPN's return and the introduction of former Formula One driver Juan Pablo Montoya, 2007 will prove this isn't your Daddy's NASCAR.

Indeed, this season will be a pivotal one for NASCAR, which looks to rebound after a mediocre 2006 that saw television ratings slip and made many wonder if the sport had reached its plateau.

But NASCAR Chairman Brian France hasn't strayed from his belief that all is well in his family-owned business.

"We're in a very strong position," he insisted. "We are still the No. 2 sport on television. Promoters continue to enjoy great ticket sales throughout the year, and I know 2007, with all of the things that are going on, will make for an exciting season."

Sunday's season-opening Daytona 500 will mark the first time a Japanese automaker will take the green flag in NASCAR's top series as Toyota's expected to have at least a handful of its Camrys in the field. Seven different drivers, including two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip and 1999 Cup champion Dale Jarrett, will race Camrys this season.

The inclusion of a foreign maker in a decidedly American sport has rankled many longtime fans, who Jarrett believes are closed-minded.

"I'm as American as the next person and I pay my taxes just like everybody else and I love this country," Jarrett said. "Toyota is a big part of the United States economy. They're going to put a lot of dollars in the sport, in promoting our sport, and that's going to be good for our sport as a whole."

The race also will include Montoya, a native of Colombia who will be the only nonwhite driver in NASCAR's top series this season. A former CART champion, Indianapolis 500 winner and popular F1 driver, Montoya is starting what is expected to be a bumpy transition from open-wheel dominance to stock-car struggles.

An aggressive and outspoken driver, he also has proved to be a quick study, leading many to predict he'll visit Victory Lane at least once this season. Montoya just wants to take it one race at a time.

"This is a learning process for me, and there's no rush for me to be perfect," Montoya said. "But I am also not here for fun. This is serious business, and I plan on winning races."

Montoya is expected to bring new fans to NASCAR, and they'll have no problem finding him as he'll be featured heavily on satellite radio and television.

NASCAR is ramping up its exposure through Sirius Satellite Radio, which has an entire NASCAR channel that will provide flag-to-flag coverage on race day, and by welcoming back ESPN after a long hiatus.

ESPN was one of NASCAR's original broadcast partners, but the network was frozen out of coverage in the 2001 television package that awarded the TV rights to Fox and NBC.

But the sports network is back with a vengeance, promising to devote hours upon hours of air time and a nightly NASCAR Now news program.

"A lot has changed at ESPN since we did our last race in 2000," said John Skipper, vice president of content. "We no longer think of the races as a three-hour event. We think of the races as an opportunity for us to establish ESPN as the 24-7 home of the NASCAR fan."

The network also will be home to the Busch Series, promising NASCAR's junior varsity the first stable programming schedule in its history.

All that coverage should make it easy to decide whether NASCAR's Car of Tomorrow helps or hinders the sport.

The futuristic vehicle, designed and developed by NASCAR, will be phased into competition this season with 16 races, beginning with the March event at Bristol.

Intended to improve racing, cut costs and bolster safety, the CoT has drawn a wide difference in opinion around the garage. And many believe the team that adapts the fastest will be the Nextel Cup champion — the car will be used in five of 10 Chase races.

"I think it's really going to come down to who has the best feel for that car," said two-time champion Tony Stewart, a vocal critic. "It's a crapshoot, I think, and we're all going to have to wait and see who has their stuff together on the Car of Tomorrow."

It also comes down to winning, as NASCAR puts an emphasis on finishing first through tweaks to the Chase format.

NASCAR always has been an exercise in consistency, with most drivers content to settle for a top 10 finish. But France hopes to change that by awarding five more points for victories this year.

Those wins also will be good for bonuses when the Chase begins — for every victory scored during the "regular-season," a driver will get a 10-point cushion to be used in seeding the playoff field.

It's all a lot to ingest, but France is confident fans will adapt.

"We're very careful with our fan base and loyalties, and we're not going to squander that away," he said.

"We're going to make changes that we think they'll like, and that enhance competition on the track first and foremost. That's where it starts for us."

A virtual tour onboard the Virgin Galactic spaceship for the public

SPACE TRAVEL
2009: A Space Odyssey
A virtual tour onboard the Virgin Galactic spaceship
Passengers won't be taking off in SpaceShipTwo until the summer of 2009 (at the earliest). This animation was designed by the London-based agency Seymourpowell to keep people interested. The firm was charged with designing conceptual interiors for the spaceship, and wasn't at all fazed by the prospect of designing something for which there was no precedent. As principal Dick Powell explains, they simply saw it as a human problem: "How do you get people of different sizes into certain positions within the spaceship?" he asks. "How do you maximize the amount of free space and include the biggest number of port holes so that people can see from wherever they are?"
You can see their solutions here.

Lakes found under Antarctica by Scientists

Scientists Find Lakes Under Antarctica

WASHINGTON (Feb. 15) - Beneath the snow, ice and bitter cold of Antarctica, scientists -- using space-based lasers -- have discovered a network of lakes that fill and empty with rapidly flowing water.

About 90 percent of the world's fresh water is locked in the thick ice cap that covers Antarctica.

It's a finding that may improve understanding of the interaction between global warming and the melting of Antarctic ice, which could contribute to a worldwide rise in ocean level.

Researchers studying data from satellites were able to measure rises and falls in the overlying ice as the lakes filled and emptied.

More than 100 lakes have been found in West Antarctica, according to research published Thursday in the online issue of the journal Science.

The ice above the lakes is moving as fast as two yards a day - "really ripping along" in the words of Robert Bindschadler of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, one of the study's co-authors.

"It's the fast-moving ice that determines how the ice sheet responds to climate change on a short timescale," he said in a statement.

"We aren't yet able to predict what these ice streams are going to do. We're still learning about the controlling processes. Water is critical, because it's essentially the grease on the wheel. But we don't know the details yet," he said.

Lead author Helen Fricker of the University of California San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography said the researchers were surprised by how fast things were moving.

"We thought these changes took place over years and decades, but we are seeing large changes over months," she said.

"We need computer models to be faithful to the processes that are actually going on on the ice sheet," she said. At this point, computer models do not show how the subglacial water is moving around.

The researchers studied images from NASA's ICESat, or Ice Cloud and land Elevation Satellite collected from 2003 to 2006. The images gave a much larger view of ice movement.

Previously researchers had to drill deep holes in the ice to determine what was going on underneath, a process that limited then to studying only small areas at a time.

About 90 percent of the world's fresh water is locked in the thick ice cap that covers Antarctica.

Space Shuttle Atlantis at launch pad for March 15, 2007 launch

02.15.07 - 7:15 p.m. EST
The Space Shuttle Atlantis arrived at Launch Pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 3:09 p.m. EST. Atlantis began its 3.4 mile journey from the Vehicle Assembly Building at 8:19 a.m. It traveled just under 1 mph.

The launch of Mission STS-117 will be the first liftoff from Pad 39A in four years.

The next milestone for this mission is a full launch dress rehearsal, known as the terminal countdown demonstration test from Feb. 21 to 23 at Kennedy. The test provides the crew an opportunity to participate in various simulated countdown activities, including equipment familiarization and emergency egress training.

The flight of Atlantis to the International Space Station has been targeted for March 15. During the 11-day mission, the six-member crew will install a new truss segment, retract a set of solar arrays and unfold a new set on the starboard side of the station. Lessons learned from two previous missions will provide the astronauts with new techniques and tools to perform their duties.

Commanding the 117 crew is Frederick Sturckow, a veteran of two shuttle missions (STS-88, STS-105), while Lee Archambault will be making his first flight as the shuttle's pilot. Mission Specialists James Reilly (STS-89, STS-104) and Patrick Forrester (STS-105) will be returning to the station. Steven Swanson and John Olivas, both mission specialists, join the crew for their first flight into space.

Frederick Sturckow, a Marine colonel, will command STS-117. The mission will deliver the second and third starboard truss segments (S3/S4) and another pair of solar arrays to the space station. Pilot Lee Archambault, an Air Force colonel, joins Sturckow in the Shuttle’s cockpit. Mission specialists James Reilly II, Ph.D., Patrick Forrester, Steven Swanson, Ph.D., and John D. Olivas, Ph.D., round out the crew. STS-117 is the 21st shuttle mission to the International Space Station.

STS-117: Just Do It -- Again

If you missed either of the last two missions, now would be the time to catch up.

When Atlantis heads for the International Space Station in March, its mission may sound a little familiar. The crew will install a new truss segment, unfurl new solar arrays and fold up an old one – all tricky stuff that’s been done on the past two missions.

The former Playboy Playmate, 39, was found unresponsive Thursday in her Seminole Hard Rock Cafe Hotel and Casino room in Hollywood, Fla., police said.

Seminole Police Chief Charlie Tiger told reporters that Smith's nurse — who was the only one with her at the time — called paramedics at about 1:38 p.m. EST after finding that Smith was unresponsive in her sixth-floor hotel room.

He said Smith's bodyguard administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation about an hour before she was declared dead.

Smith's boyfriend, Howard K. Stern, 38, was with her when she died at the hospital, her attorney Ronald Rale told FOX News.

Rale told The Associated Press that he had talked to Smith on Tuesday or Wednesday, and she had flu symptoms and a fever and was still grieving over her son.

"Poor Anna Nicole," he said. "She's been the underdog. She's been besieged ... and she's been trying her best and nobody should have to endure what she's endured."

Smith has been embroiled recently in paternity dispute with her ex-boyfriend, Larry Birkhead, 32.

Stern says he is the father of her infant daughter, Dannielynn. But Birkhead claims he's the father, and has sued to demand a paternity test.

Last month, a judge in the baby dispute temporarily blocked an order forcing Dannielynn to undergo paternity testing. A hearing was supposed to take place this week.

Birkhead's lawyer, Debra Opri, said Birkhead is "devastated" by Smith's death.

"He is inconsolable, and we are taking steps now to protect the DNA testing of the child. The child is our number one priority," she said.

But she also said they would move to get Smith's DNA tested as soon as Friday.

"We’re moving in an emergency order tomorrow for the DNA testing of Anna. We’re also going to wait with the understanding that the autopsy is not going to show what the spin doctors are saying out there, that she died of a rare flu.

"Larry Birkhead is the father and he wants his child," she told FOX News. "He doesn’t want another death. We had serious concerns and we brought it to the judge’s attention. Anna Nicole Smith is dead at the age of 39 because of her lifestyle. I do not want that child anywhere near Howard K. Stern."

What Killed Anna?

Police were informed of the star's death at about 2:45 p.m. but it wasn't being treated as a crime at this time, Tiger said. The Broward County Medical Examiner would determine the cause of death, which is under investigation, he said.

Edwina Johnson, chief investigator of the Broward County Medical Examiner's Office, said an autopsy will be done Friday.

The medical examiner's office said it will release its findings or any plans for a press conference by 9:30 a.m. Friday morning.

Smith died at the hospital, not at the hotel, according to Tiger. He said he wasn't aware of any medical problem she'd been suffering from.

"I don't know what condition she was in," Tiger said.

Local streets were closed off to rush Smith to the hospital, which was three miles away. Paramedics were seen pumping her chest as she was taken from the hotel.

Emergency responders performed CPR at the scene and a breathing apparatus was inserted into her throat, hotel officials told TMZ.com. Smith was immediately transported to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood just after 2 p.m. EST.

Stern told "Entertainment Tonight" that Smith's temperature was running high Wednesday night, and that the couple had been in Florida shopping for a new boat.

"She checked in Monday at 8 p.m. as a guest. She was due to check out tomorrow," said Danielle Giordaano, a spokeswoman for the Hard Rock Hotel.

Smith checked into the Betty Ford Clinic in 1995 for addiction to prescription painkillers and alcohol.

The Playmate has been no stranger to tragedy. Her 20-year-old son Daniel Smith died in his mother's hospital room in the Bahamas in September, three days after she gave birth to a baby girl, later named Dannielynn Hope Marshall Stern.

An American medical examiner hired by the family, Cyril Wecht, said Daniel had methadone and two antidepressants in his system when he died. Low levels of the three drugs interacted to cause an accidental death, Wecht said.

Last month, Bahamian officials agreed to conduct a formal inquest into the death of Daniel Smith. The inquest was scheduled for March 27.

More than 20 witnesses will be called to testify, including one who allegedly insists that Stern gave Daniel methadone before he died. Stern was in the room at the time of Daniel Smith's death.

The same witness also will tell officials that after Daniel's death, Stern flushed the remaining methadone down the toilet, TMZ reported. Stern has denied this report.

Smith was also going to be among the witnesses required to testify before the jury inquest, Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez said.

Smith and Stern exchanged vows in a non-marriage "commitment ceremony" 18 days after Daniel died on Sept. 10.

Early Years

Anna Nicole Smith was born Vickie Lynn Hogan in Houston, Texas, on Nov. 27, 1968.

As a teenager, she worked at a fried chicken restaurant, and married Billy Smith at age 17 in 1985. The same year she had son Daniel Smith, but then divorced Billy and became a single mother in 1987.

Smith worked a string of minimum-wage jobs before turning to stripping. She met oil mogul J. Howard Marshall II in 1991 in Houston at a nightclub, where he was a frequent patron and she worked as an exotic dancer.

The gorgeous, voluptuous blonde entered her photos in a search contest and made the cover of Playboy magazine in 1992, captivating readers with her Marilyn Monroe looks. She became Playboy's Playmate of the Year in 1993. She was also signed to a contract with Guess jeans.

Smith married Marshall, 63 years older than she, on June 27, 1994. She was 26, he was 89. The age difference sparked criticism and speculation, but Smith defended her marriage.

Smith claimed to be very close to the aging billionaire and that while they loved each other, they married for companionship and his desire to support her rather than the conventional husband and wife lifestyle.

Marshall II died in 1995 at age 90, setting off a feud with her former stepson, E. Pierce Marshall, over whether she had a right to his estate.

A federal court in California awarded Smith $474 million. That was later overturned. But in May, the U.S. Supreme Court revived her case, ruling that she deserved another day in court in her battle with her former stepson.

The stepson died June 20 at age 67. But the family said the court fight would continue.

Smith's ballooning figure and up-and-down weight was also a subject of public fascination. But she lost a reported 69 pounds and became a spokeswoman for TrimSpa. Smith and TrimSpa were sued in a class-action lawsuit last Thursday, alleging their marketing of a weight-loss pill is false or misleading.

Other than small roles in movies like "Naked Gun 33 1/3" and "The Hudsucker Proxy," Smith has appeared mostly in soft-core porn movies. From 2002-2004, E! Entertainment television gave Smith her own reality show called "The Anna Nicole Show" in the spirit of "The Osbournes."

Wayne Munroe, the Bahamian lawyer who has overseen the aftermath of her son's death, had kind words to say about Smith in response to the news of her death.

"From my professional exposure to Anna Nicole, I can say she was always personable, down to earth and driven. All in all, a joy to have as a client."
