Bush is scheduled speak Saturday evening inside a remodeled rodeo arena in Woodward, a town of about 12,000 residents in northwest Oklahoma.

WOODWARD, Oklahoma -- Former President George W. Bush was greeted by thunderous applause on Independence Day as he told thousands of spectators in a rural Oklahoma rodeo arena that the U.S. was "the greatest nation on the face of the Earth."

Bush was given six standing ovations as he spoke in Woodward, a town of about 12,000 residents in northwest Oklahoma. About 9,200 tickets were sold for the event, which would mark the biggest crowd for Bush since he left office in January.

Bush spoke of the bravery of injured soldiers he'd met throughout his presidency, and thanked members of the military for their service. He joked with the crowd, telling them it was "nice of you to give a retired guy something to do."

The former president has turned up in a handful of out-of-the-way places since leaving office, and he surprised city leaders in Woodward by accepting their invitation to speak at festivities celebrating the $25 million renovation of a local park.

Woodward is friendly territory for President Bush, who visited the town two decades ago while campaigning for his father's presidential bid. Oklahoma hasn't voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since 1964, and was the only state in the 2008 election to have every county vote for Republican candidate John McCain.

In 2004, President Bush won 80.9 percent of the vote in Woodward County as he defeated Democratic challenger John Kerry.

A banner welcoming President George W. Bush hangs from a restaurant on a highway entering Woodward. Not far down the road, marquees for a local Atwoods store and a steak restaurant also bear welcoming messages.

President Bush's principles ring true in Oklahoma, said Kris Day, who owns The Cowboy's Tack Shop with her husband, Neal.

"We're conservative," she said. "We don't spend money we don't have."

Riffel said it will be the first presidential visit to Woodward since the late 1950s, when Dwight Eisenhower landed at the airport outside town en route to view drought damage in the area.

Red, white and blue bunting hangs outside the arena at Crystal Beach Park where Bush is to speak. The two-day "Let Freedom Ring 2009" event also featured performances by country artists including Tanya Tucker, Marty Stuart, Asleep at the Wheel and Sawyer Brown.

Seats for the speech -- held at a rodeo arena built in the 1930s as part of the Works Progress Administration -- ranged from $25 up to $500 for the "Oval Office Ticket" in the first rows, close to Bush, with VIP parking and complimentary beverages.

Event promoter Landon Laubhan declined to say how much Bush was getting paid to speak

God bless you President George W. Bush, the greatest president this country has ever had. Thank you for your leadership, courage and strength, especially after 9/11. Thank you for keeping this country safe for over 7 years and taking the fight to al queda. Thank you for freeing 50 million people, saving millions in Africa, thousands in New Orleans by getting them to evacuate. Thank you for ridding the world of saddam hussein and the taliban. Thank you for presiding over the longest period of employment and economic expansion in history, until the housing bubble popped and world recession crept in. Thank you for Justices Alito and Roberts. Thank you for lowering my taxes, helping my elderly mother get cheaper drugs and improving minority test scores in school. Thank you for protecting the rights of the unborn. Thank you for doing more for improving the environment of the world then any other president in history by restoring the large marshlands in Iraq which had been drained by saddam hussein. And thank you for your honesty and integrity. God bless you.

Why do the lefties want to ignore the FACT that the Dems were in control of Congress the last 2 years when everything went south? The same party who pushed for mortgages to be given to people who were not able to pay them. The party who ignored the soaring gas prices which in may ways was the reason that the mortgage crisis happened in the first place.

The thing that I respect about former President Bush was that he was willing to sacrifice his popularity for a goal greater then himself.

Fixing a failed state? Check.
Ridding the world of a dictator? Check.

Changing the status quo in the Middle east? Check.

Here is where we on the Right are better then the left; We know our leaders are human (not a demi-g-ds Evan Thomas of Newsweek) and most every republican president sacrfices for a greater goal them himself.

I am still waiting to hear from any lefties what ideals will Obama sacrfice his popularity for?

here is the answer: Obama will not sacrifice anything of himself for the USA.

God bless you President and Laura Bush. Your crtics were gnats compared to the work that you accomplished.

Obama cares for nothing except for Obama.
